Senegal’s elections may require second round

Preliminary results of the Presidential elections in Senegal have seen a very close race between current President Abdoulaye Wade and his former Prime Minister, Macky Sall. The official results are expected by Friday 2nd March, and a likely second round of votes between the two candidates is expected to take place around mid-March.

Last update on Senegal - Feb 22

The Global Greens continue to monitor closely the evolving situation in Dakar, Senegal, where political unrest due to the forthcoming Presidential elections on 26th February has seen one person dead and clashes with riot police intensify over the past days.

Senegal has been a model of stability and democracy for many years. Citizens however have now taken to the streets to oppose the third-term mandate sought by President Abdoulaye Wade, an unconstitutional move according to the opposition.
